The volume consists of questions from the floor and Bion's fascinating and, at times, controversial answers. The lectures are divided in two: the first part was organized by the Italian Psychoanalytical Society and the second by the Via Pollaiolo Research Group. Bion's replies examine such diverse subjects as difficulties in the interaction between the therapist and the patient; music and psychoanalysis; non-verbal communication in the consulting room; and methodology in psychoanalysis.'What I want to draw attention to is this idea that the human animal has a mind, or a character, or a personality. It seems to be quite a useful theory, and we behave as if we thought it was more than that. When it comes to being psychoanalysts and psychiatrists, this cannot be treated as if it were simply an entertaining theory. Nor do patients come to see us because they are suffering from an entertaining theory. We could say that there is one collaborator we have in analysis on whom we can rely, because he behaves as if he really had a mind and because he thought that somebody not himself could help. In short, the most important assistance that a psychoanalyst is ever likely to get is not from his analyst, or supervisor, or teacher, or the books that he can read, but from his patient.'- W.R. War Memoirs, 1917-1919

Wilfred R. Bion, Francesca Bion (Editor)

1997    320 pages    (Routledge)

ISBN 13: 9781855751538    ISBN 10: 1855751534

War Memoirsis perhaps the most exceptional piece of autobiography yet written by a psychoanalyst. The first section of the book is documentary, consisting of the entire text of the diaries which the author wrote as a young man to record his experiences on the Western Front in 1917-1919. The photographs and diagrams with which he illustrated his recollections are also reproduced here. The diaries are followed by two later essays in the second part in which he reflects upon his wartime experiences. These meditations are influenced by his psychoanalytic training, and perhaps also suggest how his approach to psychoanalysis was influenced by his war-time experiences. Together, these diaries and essays provide a most moving picture of war and its effects. [less]

Wilfred Bion: His Life and Works 1897-1979

Gerard Bleandonu

1994    303 pages    (The Guilford Press)

ISBN 13: 9780898621853    ISBN 10: 0898621852

Wilfred Bion was one of the most original and influential thinkers in recent psychoanalysis. His ideas, which can be traced in direct line in the development of psychoanalytic theory from Freud to Melanie Klein, are difficult to grasp because his writing style was often enigmatic and ambiguous. This is the first full biography and the first comprehensive explication of his significant contribution to psychoanalytic theory and practice. Bion was born in 1897 and spent his early childhood in India. He endured tragedy as a young man when his wife died after giving birth. In his later years, he found great love with his second wife. A bona fide war hero who won a Military Cross in the Tank Corps, he became Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Tavistock Clinic, London in 1945; Director of the London Clinic of Psychoanalysis from 1956 to 1962; and President of the British Psychoanalytic Society from 1962 to 1965. He made pioneering studies in psychiatric rehabilitation, founded the group relations movement, and wrote what many believe to be the most important body of work on individual psychoanalysis since Freud and Klein. In 1968, he withdrew to California to escape the perils of fame. Although he originally intended to stay for three or four years, he did not return to England until 1979. Two months later, he died in Oxford. Dr. Bleandonu takes us through Bion's personal and intellectual explorations and gives clear accounts of his key concepts, including work groups and basic assumption groups, psychotic processes, catastrophic change, abandonment of memory and desire, the mystic, and ultimate truth. In addition, the grid is carefully laid out and explicated; the emergence of theidea of links, and attacks on them, as a core theme for the rest of Bion's working life is given proper attention; and Bion's attempt to create an extensive psychoanalytic epistemology is discussed. Finally, Bleandonu guides the reader through the fantasy writings in the Memoir of t [less]

Being a Character: Psychoanalysis & Self Experience

Christopher Bollas

1994    (Hill & Wang)

ISBN 13: 9780809015696    ISBN 10: 0809015692

Each person invests many of the objects in his life with his or her own unconscious meaning, each person subsequently voyages through an environment that constantly evokes the self's psychic history. Each person invests many of the objects in his life with his or her own unconscious meaning, each person subsequently voyages through an environment that constantly evokes the self's psychic history. Taking Freud's model of dreamwork as a model for all unconscious thinking, Christopher Bollas argues that we dreamwork ourselves into becoming who we are, and illustrates how the analyst and the patient use such unconscious processes to develop new psychic structures that the patient can use to alter his or her self experience. Building on this foundation, he goes on to describe some very special forms of self experience, including the tragic madness of women cutting themselves, the experience of a cruising homosexual in bars and bathes and the demented ferocity of the facist state of mind. An original interpreter of classical theory and clinical issues, in Being a Character Christopher Bollas takes the reader into the very texture of the psychoanalytic process. [less]

ISBN 13: 9780946960125    ISBN 10: 0946960127

In this careful exposition of the concept of the ego ideal, the author explores the short cuts that are available to the psyche and traces the longer, more painful path to maturity. She develops in her own way Freud's view that people are forever seeking to regain a lost state of perfection, the state in which they were their own ideal - "primary narcissism." The book includes chapters on the following aspects of the ego ideal: perversion, genitality, being-in-love, groups, sublimation in the [...]
