Previously unpublished in English, this book comprises lectures W.R. Bion gave in Rome, in 1977. The volume consists of questions from the floor and Bion's fascinating and, at times, controversial answers. The lectures are divided in two: the first part was organized by the Italian Psychoanalytical Society and the second by the Via Pollaiolo Research Group. Bion's replies examine such diverse subjects as difficulties in the interaction between the therapist and the patient; music and psychoanalysis; non-verbal communication in the consulting room; and methodology in psychoanalysis.'What I want to draw attention to is this idea that the human animal has a mind, or a character, or a personality. It seems to be quite a useful theory, and we behave as if we thought it was more than that. When it comes to being psychoanalysts and psychiatrists, this cannot be treated as if it were simply an entertaining theory. Nor do patients come to see us because they are suffering from an entertaining theory. We could say that there is one collaborator we have in analysis on whom we can rely, because he behaves as if he really had a mind and because he thought that somebody not himself could help. In short, the most important assistance that a psychoanalyst is ever likely to get is not from his analyst, or supervisor, or teacher, or the books that he can read, but from his patient.'- W.R. Each person invests many of the objects in his life with his or her own unconscious meaning, each person subsequently voyages through an environment that constantly evokes the self's psychic history. Taking Freud's model of dreamwork as a model for all unconscious thinking, Christopher Bollas argues that we dreamwork ourselves into becoming who we are, and illustrates how the analyst and the patient use such unconscious processes to develop new psychic structures that the patient can use to alter his or her self experience. Building on this foundation, he goes on to describe some very special forms of self experience, including the tragic madness of women cutting themselves, the experience of a cruising homosexual in bars and bathes and the demented ferocity of the facist state of mind. An original interpreter of classical theory and clinical issues, in Being a Character Christopher Bollas takes the reader into the very texture of the psychoanalytic process. [less]

This book is an encyclopedia of child analysis and analytically oriented psychotherapy. Dr Glenn is not only the editor, but has contributed either as sole author or in collaboration with others no less than five of the 24 chapters of this book. The chapters cover a wide range of topics which should be of great interest to all psychoanalysts, but particularly to child analysts and every other mental health professional dealing with children. These are chapters on technique at various stages of development, from prelatency through pre-adolescence. In addition, there are one or more chapters on the theory of technique (including one on the views of Melanie Klein), the opening phase, the question of transference, dream analysis, the problem of abstinence in child analysis, the role of the parents in child analysis, on termination and on countertransference. Finally, there are sections on the application of child analysis to work with infants, psychotic children, and to other forms of psychotherapy. There are two chapters on the nursery school, one as an accompaniment to psychoanalysis and the other as a method for evaluation of childhood pathology. These two chapters plus the one on tutoring should be of special interest to educators, as is the final chapter on teaching of psychoanalysis in the United States. [less]
